Manitoba AMBER Alert Plan

The AMBER Alert system is a voluntary partnership between law enforcement agencies and broadcasters to send out an emergency alert to the public when a child has been abducted and it is believed that the child's life is in imminent danger.

An AMBER Alert provides the public with immediate and up-to-date information about a child abduction via widespread media broadcasts and solicits the public's help in the safe and swift return of the child. When the AMBER Alert is initiated, radio and television stations immediately interrupt programming to broadcast information about the abducted child.

The AMBER Alert system works because it instantly notifies the local community who can immediately help search for the child and his or her abductor. Additionally, having the program in place deters this type of crime.

AMBER Alert Guidelines:

  • An AMBER Alert may only be activated by police agencies
  • An AMBER Alert is used only for the most serious, time critical child abduction cases
  • An AMBER alert is not used for runaways or parental abductions except in life-threatening cases
