![]() "ALL ABOUT ME" Fingerprint and Photo I.D. ProgramA missing child is every parent's worst nightmare. Most parents would like to believe that such an occurrence could never happen to them. While proper precautions and learning safety skills go a long way toward protecting children, cases of lost or runaway children and abductions do occur. The Child Find Manitoba Fingerprinting and Photo I.D. program offers vital information for a parent in the event their child goes missing. The Photo I.D. card gives parents a photo of their child with their pertinent information in a laminated wallet size card, which should be kept with the parent at all times.
In times of stress, such as that experienced by a parent whose child is missing, it is important to have a recent photo and vital statistics about the child readily available to give to the authorities. Most parents do not know their child's height and weight under normal circumstances. It is helpful to have this information written down rather than to rely on memory in situations where you believe your child to be lost or missing. Fingerprinting is offered along with the Photo I.D., and is taken in a booklet which has space for other information about the child along with a current photo. Parents should keep the booklet in a safe place in the home. In the event your child went missing, you would provide the police with this information. No two fingerprints are identical, nor do fingerprints change as one gets older. While having your child's fingerprints taken will not prevent your child from going missing, most agencies that handle missing children agree that fingerprints as well as dental records can be quite helpful. Though most useful in the identification of children that have been found, fingerprints are a valuable means of positive identification where photographs and physical descriptions may fail if a child is missing for a long time.
